Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2026) vs Paperwhite (2026) Signature Edition: What is the Signature Edition?

Amazon’s latest Kindle line-up includes two new Paperwhite models: a standard and a Signature Edition.

With Amazon promising the new Paperwhite series is thinner, lighter and sports the largest display of its kind, what really separates the Paperwhite from the Paperwhite Signature Edition? That’s where we come in.

We’ve highlighted all the key differences between the 2026 Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition below. Read on to see what separates the two and if you think either stands a chance at making it into the best Kindle and best e-readers guides.

Price and Availability

Both the Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition are available to buy now from across the US, UK, Canada and more. It’s slightly pricier than the entry-level Kindle (2026), with a starting price of $199.99.

The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition is more expensive, with an RRP of $249.99. Both iterations come in Graphite, but the Signature Edition is also available in Seaglass Green.

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition has an aluminium back

Much like the Kindle and Kindle Aluminium, one of the biggest differences between the Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition is that the latter has an aluminium back. This means that, in theory, the Signature Edition should feel more premium in hand than its cheaper counterpart – though we’re yet to confirm this ourselves.

Even so, both iterations share the same seven-inch, e-ink display which has an adjustable warm light that makes for more comfortable reading in lower lighting environments. That’s something we wish the cheaper Kindle had, and is a welcome aspect of the Paperwhite series.

The 2026 Kindle Paperwhite series also boasts the largest display and the highest contrast ratio of its kind, which Amazon promises will deliver deep blacks and crisp texts.

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition comes with double the storage

Although the Kindle Paperwhite comes with a decent 16GB of storage, which should be enough for housing plenty of e-books and audiobooks, the Signature Edition benefits from double that at 32GB instead.

While generally we’ve found 16GB to be enough for casual readers, if you know you’ll likely store plenty of content, then the Signature Edition is a worthy investment.

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition is fitted with an auto-adjusting front light

Although both are fitted with an adjustable front light, the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition’s is auto-adjusting. That means it can detect the lighting level of your room and make the light either cooler or warmer accordingly, resulting in less eye strain as the light goes down.

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition retains double tap page-turning

Much like the 2024 version, this year’s Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition allows you to double tap to turn the page. Essentially when this is enabled, you can simply tap twice anywhere on the side or back of the device to move onto the next page. In addition, doing this while you’re on the Home screen Library will advance you to the next section too.

Although both are e-readers at their core, offer access to Amazon’s Kindle Store and are fitted with a front light, there are a few small but thoughtful upgrades found within the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition that might sway you to choose it over the standard version.

Not only does the Signature Edition have double the storage capacity, but it also sports an aluminium rear and a clever auto-adjusting front light that prevents you from straining your eyes. However, these features do come with an additional cost.
