Amazon’s Ring brings ‘Neighbours’ app to UK amid US controversy


Amazon-owned doorbell camera maker Ring is launching its community alert platform, Neighbours, in the UK.

Set to debut for free inside the main Ring app on October 21, the service aims to replace the local WhatsApp and Facebook groups with a for neighbourhood safety updates and lost pets.

Users will set a location radius between 0.1 and five miles, allowing non-Ring owners and device users alike to view real-time safety alerts. Ring’s international managing director, Dave Ward, told The Guardian that traditional chat groups often suffer from a “broad-stroked flood of information” that leads to muting, whereas the Neighbours platform is tailored strictly to community-focused updates.

Alongside general alerts, the platform introduces , enabling owners to broadcast missing pet reports. Participating outdoor camera users with cloud subscriptions can opt in to let AI scan for potential matches, automatically notifying them if footage spots the missing animal so they can share it with the owner.

The rollout follows intense privacy scrutiny in the United States over police integration and data sharing. To address these concerns, controversial US features, such as police information requests and verified public safety agency broadcasts, will initially be withheld from the UK launch.

Furthermore, Ring claims that posts will undergo to bar illegal content, discrimination and speculation.

To bolster data security, Ring has introduced a default encryption mechanism called TAKE (throw away the key encryption). This system locks recordings behind time-limited keys that expire after 24 hours, blocking even Amazon from accessing stored videos without explicit user consent.
