Apple to unveil OLED MacBook Pro with touchscreen this week

Apple could be just days away from unveiling its biggest MacBook Pro redesign in years, with a new report suggesting the company will introduce its first touchscreen MacBook alongside an updated iMac at an October 28 event in Los Angeles.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the redesigned MacBook Pro will feature an OLED display, a thinner and lighter design, and a Dynamic Island-style cutout, bringing some of the biggest changes to Apple’s professional laptops in years.

The company is reportedly preparing both 14-inch and 16-inch versions, although the overall design is expected to remain familiar.

The biggest change is undoubtedly the touchscreen, which would mark a shift for Apple after years of keeping touch controls exclusive to devices such as the iPad.

To accommodate the new hardware, Apple is updating macOS with an interface that responds differently to touch and trackpad input. For example, tapping a button could bring up larger controls around the user’s finger, making navigation easier without completely changing how the Mac works.

The move to OLED technology should also bring deeper blacks and improved contrast compared with the mini-LED displays found on current MacBook Pro models. Meanwhile, the Dynamic Island-style cutout would replace the existing notch and introduce space for interactive elements, similar to those found on recent iPhones.

Interestingly, the higher-end OLED models are expected to retain Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which debuted earlier this year, rather than moving to a new processor generation. However, these upgrades could come at a cost, with reports suggesting starting prices may rise by as much as $500.

Apple is also expected to keep its existing mini-LED models available as more affordable alternatives, while a separate entry-level MacBook Pro with an M6 chip and conventional display could also make an appearance.

The MacBook Pro isn’t the only device reportedly getting attention. Apple is also preparing a refreshed 24-inch iMac powered by the M6 chip, replacing the current M4 model introduced in 2024. New colour options are expected, although the specific shades remain unknown, and major design changes appear unlikely.

Now, Apple’s reported October 28 showcase looks set to focus on bringing significant display and usability improvements to the MacBook Pro, while giving the iMac a more straightforward performance upgrade. An OLED iMac is reportedly in development too, but that model is still several years away.
