Connecting Claude to Google Sheets made my charts more interesting and interactive

If I wanted something colorful, I'd apply a theme and call it a day.

But I've never manually built an interactive sheet. It requires more formula work than I'm willing to do on any given day, not to mention the time it'll take to learn everything the build needs.

AI has made that easier. A few weeks ago, I used Google Gemini in Sheets to build an interactive habit tracker, and it handled most of the formula work for me. It required a paid Google AI plan.

But other AI tools can do this too, so you don't need multiple subscriptions.

If you pay for Anthropic's Claude, I'll show you how to use it with Google Sheets to make your charts more interesting and interactive.

To get even more out of it, set up the Google Sheets connector in the Claude app. This lets you create interactive dashboards with your charts and data.

To set up Claude in Google Sheets:

  1. Open your sheet and go to on the toolbar.
  2. Get add-ons.

  3. Search for Claude on the marketplace and select it.

To connect Google Sheets to the Claude app:

  1. Open Claude and click your name in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  2. Select from the pop-up menu.
  3. Scroll down and select .
  4. Search for Google Sheets, click , and sign in to your Google account.

With these two set up, you can use Claude inside Sheets and also work with your sheets from the Claude app.

Unique ways to use Google Sheets beyond number crunching

To test the setup, I used a sample household budget with two tabs.

One tab had nine months of spending across 10 categories, while the other contained the monthly budget for each category.

  • A sheet in Google Sheets showing rows of data and an open Claude sidebar.
  • A sheet in Google Sheets with a short row of data and an open Claude sidebar.

Next, I gave the Claude Sheets add-on a simple prompt to create a new tab with a table grouping total spend by category and a line chart of spending by month. It built both and sorted the categories from highest to lowest.

  • A sheet in Google Sheets showing a table of data and an open Claude sidebar.
  • A sheet in Google Sheets showing a simple line chart and an open Claude sidebar.

I then asked it to compare each category's monthly average against the budget tab. It did, with color codes: green for under budget and red for above budget.

It also gave me a bar chart showing the comparisons and summarized the results. In this hypothetical scenario, I was spending $2,848.68 a month against a $2,830 budget, and gifts and groceries were the reason.

  • A sheet in Google Sheets showing a data table and an open Claude sidebar.
  • A sheet in Google Sheets showing a comparison bar chart and an open Claude sidebar.

I asked it to add a dropdown that lets me pick a category, along with an auto-updating chart based on my pick.

  • A sheet in Google Sheets showing an interactive table and an open Claude sidebar.
  • A sheet in Google Sheets showing a line chart and an open Claude sidebar.

This was already quite interactive, but it could still do more.

Claude can create dashboards from those sheets

And it updates when you add new data

After creating the interactive charts, I realized one problem.

Coming back to the sheet to read them can be tiring, especially if you don't use Sheets often. The fix is a dashboard inside the Claude app that updates when your data changes.

To do this, I opened the Claude app, typed , pasted the Google Sheet link, and asked for a visual representation of my total spending, average monthly spending, spending by category, a monthly trend, and which categories were over budget.

To test whether the dashboard updated, I added October's spending (10 new rows) to the bottom of my original data tab.

The budget comparison table and the dropdown table updated right away. The others only updated after I asked Claude to make them all auto-update when I add new rows.

The dashboard also updated to reflect the new information when I clicked the refresh button in the upper-right corner.

The dashboard doesn't update live. It pulls new data when you open it in Claude or click the refresh icon.

Claude's interactive charts have several more applications

This is just one way to use Claude's charts and dashboards with Sheets.

If you're a freelancer, you could log invoices and create a dashboard showing monthly income, late payments, and how close you are to your yearly goal. Similarly, you could log your workouts and create a chart that tracks your weekly progress.

If something doesn't work, a simple prompt asking Claude to troubleshoot should fix it.

If you're still deciding which AI subscription deserves your money, here's how Claude stacks up against ChatGPT and Gemini.
