Crystal Lake is the perfect TV series to watch this Halloween, as it takes a deep dive into Pamela Voorhees' psyche. Finally, we get to learn more about the Friday the 13th character, played brilliantly by Linda Cardellini.

Friday the 13th's prequel series has arrived on Peacock, with all eight episodes available to watch. International viewers need to wait a little longer, though; check out our release date schedule for more on that.

Across eight episodes, explores the origins of Pamela Voorhees, Jason's mother and the original killer in the popular slasher franchise. I've been excited about this for months, as we haven't really had a deep dive into who Pamela is across the original movie series.

Linda Cardellini stars in the leading role, bringing many layers to Pamela. The catalyst for her behavior comes when her young son, Jason (Callum Vinson), drowns at Camp Crystal Lake, where she works as a cook. Grief-stricken, Pamela struggles to cope, leading to increasing paranoia and an eventual spiral into the serial killer we know her as.

Pamela is shown through a very empathetic lens, as a lonely single mother who has lost her only child. She has everything ripped away from her and even so, tries her best to keep it together. But her descent into insanity is inevitable, and even in the first episode, the kills are brutal and shocking.

There's some mystery surrounding Pamela's past that's well worth sticking around for. In , Pamela feels really well-rounded, and as a huge fan of the original movies, I loved how much care the creators put into fleshing her out.

was penned by Brad Caleb Kane, who recently worked on HBO Max's excellent series Welcome to Derry. I've really been enjoying his adaptations of classic horror media recently, and I hope it continues.

There's also a welcome expansion on another character. Jason's father, Elias, gets a new storyline that ties in well with Pamela's mysterious backstory. Elias is played by Hamish Linklater, who delivers a great performance as a man whose decisions severely influence how Jason turns out and, crucially, how he actually survives his drowning, as we've seen in the original Friday the 13th movie.

adds a lot of new lore to the franchise, but it does feel like it's stretched out in places. These pacing issues didn't affect my enjoyment of the series too much, but even a six-episode run would've felt tighter, in my opinion.

I hope many Friday the 13th fans share my opinions about , particularly when it comes to the characters, and how they've been given genuinely interesting backstories and expansions beyond the original movies. This is the kind of prequel that feels like it was made by someone who really cares about the source material.

There are a lot of nods to the movies, such as seeing the killer's point of view, that chilling score, and a title sequence that will make anyone feel nostalgic for the era of 80s slasher films. It's a well-crafted series with great editing, something that fits right in with the abundance of Friday the 13th stories.

In my opinion, this is the perfect series to watch over Halloween, or indeed sooner if you're feeling impatient. It's gripping and binge-worthy, giving horror fans both familiarity and some new material for them to get excited about.
