Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei will brief the UN Security Council on Wednesday, alongside OpenAI’s Sam Altman, at a session devoted to the future of AI, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.
Yet Dario Amodei will attend the meeting remotely rather than in the chamber, according to Bloomberg.
The briefers listed also comprise Yoshua Bengio, who is co-chair of the UN’s panel on AI, and Clément Delangue, the chief executive of Hugging Face.
Last week, an OpenAI spokesperson told Reuters that Sam Altman is expected to discuss OpenAI’s safety efforts and the importance of international cooperation and common safety standards, and that Chinese AI companies, such as DeepSeek and Moonshot, have been invited to make statements.
The UN body responsible for international peace and security, the council, first discussed AI in July 2023, when China cautioned that the technology must not become a “runaway horse”.
The session was initiated by France, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the council, and will address the malicious use of AI and the risk of losing control of advanced models, as stated in a French conceptual note.
The meeting takes place during the UN General Assembly, when world leaders meet in New York. It comes after a series of warnings about AI safety, including one from Amodei, and amid growing demands for countries to coordinate their approaches to regulating the technology.
On 12 September, Dario Amodei set out his position in an essay in which he asked AI companies to slow the pace at which they improve their models and suggested that independent evaluators should have continuous access to frontier labs. Altman and Elon Musk publicly supported this request.
China, as one of the five permanent members of the council, responded. According to its foreign ministry, two days later, “fearmongering, confrontation and vicious competition” would only serve to disrupt global AI governance.
