Google’s next TV streaming box could be getting a major upgrade

Google’s next TV Streamer could be getting a major upgrade, with a new report suggesting the company is preparing to add built-in microphones, presence sensors and a faster processor to its streaming box.

According to 9to5Google, the upcoming model will retain a similar design but introduce features that could make it more useful around the home. The report follows Google’s decision to increase the current TV Streamer’s price from $99.99 to $149.99 in August, without making any hardware changes.

Perhaps the biggest addition is a set of far-field microphones built directly into the box. These would allow users to issue “Hey Google” voice commands without reaching for the remote, much like they would with a Google Home speaker.

It’s a convenient addition, although users who already have a Google smart speaker nearby may find the benefit limited. Whether hands-free commands alone make the device worth upgrading to remains questionable.

The new TV Streamer is also expected to introduce presence sensing, allowing it to detect when someone enters the room. Similar technology is already available on the TCL QM9K, which can activate a Google Photos screensaver and display information such as the time or weather when someone approaches. However, it is not yet confirmed exactly how Google plans to implement the feature on its new streaming box.

Under the hood, Google is reportedly preparing a faster processor and more storage than the current model’s 32GB. That could be a more meaningful improvement for users looking for better everyday performance.

The competition is worth considering, too. Apple’s TV 4K uses the A15 Bionic chip, while Nvidia’s Shield TV Pro runs on the Tegra X1+. However, the chipset powering Google’s next TV Streamer hasn’t been identified, making direct performance comparisons impossible for now.

Design changes appear relatively minor. The new box is reportedly slightly narrower than its predecessor, while the remote is expected to gain two additional shortcut buttons alongside the existing YouTube and Netflix controls. There’s no word yet on which apps the new buttons will support.

There was also previous speculation about a Google TV Streamer Pro after the name appeared in international retailer listings in 2024. However, 9to5Google subsequently reported that Google had considered the name for the original TV Streamer, rather than developing a separate premium model.

Google hasn’t officially announced the next-generation TV Streamer, and there’s currently no confirmed launch date or pricing.

The rumored upgrades could make Google’s streaming box a more appealing option, particularly for those who want additional smart home features. However, with the current model now costing $150, it remains to be seen whether microphones, presence sensing and improved hardware will offer enough value to justify the expense.
