Instagram tests Features – could it rival YouTube?

Instagram is testing a new long-form video format called Features, which will allow creators to upload horizontal videos lasting up to 90 minutes, marking a significant shift from the platform’s usual focus on short-form content.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, testing began on Monday with a select group of creators in the US, following earlier trials in Brazil. Instagram’s Vice President of Product, Tessa Lyons, and head Adam Mosseri have also shared details about the format, which is primarily aimed at podcasters looking to share full episodes or longer video clips without directing viewers to another platform.

Rather than displaying these lengthy videos directly in the Explore feed, Instagram will initially show shorter previews to help users discover the content. Those interested in watching more can simply tap a new ‘Watch full video’ button, which will take them to the complete recording. It’s a relatively straightforward approach that allows Instagram to introduce longer content without completely changing how people browse the app.

The move could also put Instagram in closer competition with YouTube, which already supports full-length video podcasts alongside shorter clips. For creators, the biggest advantage is being able to share both formats in one place, potentially reaching audiences who might otherwise only come across their content through Reels. However, it remains to be seen whether Instagram users, who are more accustomed to scrolling through shorter videos, will embrace episodes lasting well over an hour.

Features will initially be available through Instagram’s mobile app, with support for Instagram for TV planned for a later date. The company reportedly expects to expand the format to all US users by the end of 2026 or early 2027, although there’s no word yet on availability outside the country.

As of now, the feature remains in testing, but it suggests Instagram is looking beyond short-form videos as it tries to keep more creators and viewers on its platform.
