Is this the end of the road for the Tesla Cybertruck?

Tesla plans to wind down production of its Cybertruck at its Texas gigafactory next year, with Elon Musk appearing to signal the end of the road for the angular vehicle.

Musk stated that the production wind-down is necessary to “make room” at the Austin facility to ramp up manufacturing of Tesla’s newly launched Cybercab.

While Musk did not explicitly clarify whether the vehicle would be built elsewhere, the Austin plant is the only Tesla facility equipped to manufacture the Cybertruck’s specialised components.

Confirming the vehicle’s apparent discontinuation, project lead engineer Wes Morrill wrote on X: “Cybertruck was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab.”

The Cybertruck has had a tumultuous history since its 2019 unveiling, when a live demonstration of its supposedly unbreakable glass ended in embarrassment as the windows shattered. Beset by repeated delays, the vehicle finally launched in 2023 with its signature stainless-steel, retro-futuristic exterior.

While it attracted a dedicated fanbase, with Musk calling it the “best vehicle Tesla has ever made”, it faced harsh criticism from detractors who mocked its unconventional look.

Furthermore, the vehicle struggled to capture mass-market appeal or penetrate lucrative overseas markets. Its sharp edges and stainless-steel frame made securing regulatory approval difficult in regions like Europe.

The pickup also suffered from quality-control setbacks, including a major 2025 recall affecting over 46,000 units due to trim detachment risks, alongside multiple price revisions that saw higher-end models reach $102,000.

Though Tesla does not break down individual sales figures, grouping the vehicle into an “Other Models” category that recorded 8,295 deliveries in the third quarter, Musk noted that the existing fleet will “be around for a long time”. Attention at Tesla is now shifting toward the steering-wheel-free Cybercab as the company pivots toward an autonomous robotaxi future.
