Jaguar has officially unveiled its luxury Type 01 EV in New York, marking a crucial milestone two years after its controversial corporate rebrand sparked widespread criticism.
The is the most powerful road car Jaguar has ever produced, packing a tri-motor setup that pushes out over 1,000 horsepower and delivers a projected range of up to 450 miles. Production is slated to begin in 2027 at with a hefty starting price of £130,000.
However, the vehicle’s massive proportions, measuring roughly two metres wide, have raised practical concerns, with critics noting that its expansive frame is far better suited to wide American highways than cramped UK parking infrastructure.
The launch comes at a fragile time for parent company Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The manufacturer has struggled with falling sales as low-cost Chinese competitors chip away at its market share, alongside the fallout from a crippling cyber attack last year that halted production for weeks.
Compounding these pressures, JLR recently announced plans to cut 4,000 jobs globally to slash costs by £1.7bn.
By targeting wealthy overseas buyers with an aggressive design, Jaguar hopes the Type 01 will help turn the page on a turbulent period marked by previous strategic missteps and financial strain.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the production of Jaguar’s new electric car would “support thousands of jobs across the West Midlands and North West”, adding it would mark “another step forward in our mission to reindustrialise Britain”.
