Keurig K-Supreme Plus Special Edition Single Serve Coffee Maker Review

Quick, compact, and convenient, the Keurig K-Supreme Plus Special Edition (SE) Single Serve Coffee Maker is perfect for single cup coffee lovers. It doesn’t take up much space on the countertop, doesn’t take a long time to brew, and doesn’t have a steep learning curve. Added features, like temperature control, strength control, and brew over ice – along with a larger water reservoir capacity – take this Keurig model to the next level.

  • Brew over ice feature
  • Temperature control
  • Strength control
  • Gray trim is rather bland
  • No dual position reservoir

Keurig coffee makers are known for simplicity. And while I’ve always been intrigued, in theory, by the ability to pop a K-Cup pod into the top of the brewer and quickly receive a cup of coffee, in reality, I envisioned the result to be similar to a coffee vending machine.

I’ve always shied away from testing Keurigs because the Keurig Classic models lacked the features found in my favorite drip coffee makers. However, the newer models are more advanced, and I jumped at the opportunity to try one of the Keurig K-Supreme coffee makers. Keep reading to see if the Keurig K-Supreme Plus SE should earn a spot on our list of the best coffee makers.

Design and features

  • Water filter cartridge confusing
  • Generous water tank
  • User-friendly design

The K-Supreme Plus SE differs from the Keurig K-Supreme in several ways. The Plus version offers an additional, smaller, single serve quantity option, and also has a larger water reservoir capacity. It also offers more customization features.

The K-Supreme Plus SE arrived in a brown branded box and was well packaged to prevent damage from the shipping process. It comes in one piece with the removable parts (water tank, drip tray) taped down.

There’s also a water filter cartridge, which is designed to help remove chlorine and other impurities from the water, so coffee tastes better. The water filter cartridge should be inserted in the bottom of the water filter handle.

The K-Supreme Plus SE has a compact design. The stainless-steel metal wrap looks sleek and modern; however, I think the grey trim makes this model look cheaper than the black trim on the regular K-Supreme.

The generous water tank is a welcome update. It has a 78-ounce water capacity, compared to the 72-oz water tank on the regular K-Supreme. However, this model does not have the dual-capacity reservoir that’s on the K-Supreme. A dual position reservoir lets you place it on the side or on the back of the machine, which is a neat feature when counter space is an issue.

There’s a drip tray at the bottom, and it can be removed to create more space for a travel mug.

Keurig K-Supreme Plus Special Edition Single Serve Coffee Maker Controls top

The control panel is easy to use. The top of the control panel includes the power button, display panel, 3 smart start preferences, and the over-ice setting.

Below that is a round panel that includes what I refer to as the 3 fives: 5 strength settings, 5 temperature settings, and 5 brew sizes.

The 5 strength settings are strong, robust, rich, balanced, and intense.

The 5 temperature settings are warm, warmer, hot, hotter, and extra hot.

These are perhaps the two most important and hotly-debated preferences regarding coffee. Two people can drink the same coffee and one person will claim that the coffee is weak, while the other person says it’s too strong. Or, one person will claim that the coffee is too hot, while another person says it’s not hot enough. The ability to adjust both the strength and temperature is designed to accommodate a variety of preferences.

The five brew sizes are 4 oz, 6 oz, 8 oz, 10 oz, and 12 oz. The addition of the 4oz option is an upgrade from the regular K-Supreme model. It should also be noted that the regular K-Supreme only has one strength setting (strong), and no option to change temperature settings – unless it’s over ice.

  • Adjustable strength and temp
  • Brews quickly
  • Back-to-back brewing

The user-friendly design of the K-Supreme Plus SE makes it easy to use. Put a mug on the drip tray base. Then place a K-Cup pod in the K-Cup pod holder and lower the lid. Select the strength, temperature, and quantity, and then press Start (the giant K in the middle of the control panel).

Coffee brewed quickly. For example, I brewed a 12-ounce cup of coffee in 1 minute and 16 seconds. Usually, when I’m brewing a pot of coffee, I press start and walk away until I hear the alert. However, since it only took a little over a minute, I tended to just stay there and wait on the coffee to finish brewing.

During the testing process, I went through all of the strength settings (balanced, strong, robust, rich, and intense). I can’t say I could tell a distinct difference in all of the settings; however, intense is definitely more concentrated than balanced.

The temperature settings are also pretty accurate. The warm and warmer cups needed to be microwaved because they were too tepid, whereas I found the hot and hotter settings to be perfect, and the extra hot setting made the coffee too hot to drink until it cooled down.

The brew over ice option lowers the water’s brewing temperature so the ice won’t melt so quickly and cause the finished result to taste watery. However, keep in mind that ice is still going to start melting rather rapidly. Also, the ice would have been easier to see in a glass mug, but Keurig advises against using glass; the company states that plastic would have been acceptable, but I don’t have plastic mugs.

I don’t drink iced coffee, so it wouldn’t taste good to me regardless, but I’ve included a photo so you can see how well the ice held up.

One significant advantage of Keurig coffee makers – and perhaps my favorite feature – is the experimentation process. I tend to use drip coffee makers on a regular basis (the OXO Brew 9 Cup Coffee Maker and Aarke Coffee System are two of my favorites) and I have a container of decaf coffee, and a container of regular coffee. Even though these are supposedly airtight containers, the coffee won’t stay fresh forever, so I don’t want to open a lot of different bags that may lose their flavor in a few months.

Keurig K-Supreme Plus Special Edition Single Serve Coffee Maker K-Cup flavors

But with the Keurig K-Cups, I was able to try different flavors every time I brewed coffee. From McDonald’s Decaf, Green Mountain Breakfast Blend, Newman’s Own, and The Doughnut Shop to Fresh Roasted Coffee’s Blueberry Crisp, Coconut, Jamaican Me Crazy, Maple Crème – and the company’s Enviropods from Guatemala, Peru, and Ethiopia, every cup a new experience.

I enjoyed the different flavors, especially as I was able to adjust the strength to make some of them more robust, while others were more balanced, or more intense. I only went through the different temperatures once – for testing purposes – because I don’t really want to drink warm coffee.

For households with more than one coffee drinker, the 3 smart start preferences can come in handy. Up to 3 users can program their desired strength, temperature, and quantity, and then save it to one of the 3 user numbers, without having to make these selections every time.

Keurig K-Supreme Plus Special Edition Single Serve Coffee Maker Back to back brewing

The K-Supreme Plus SE can also provide back-to-back brewing. In other words, there’s no need to wait for the coffee maker to reheat before making the next cup, which is certainly a welcome feature for those with multiple coffee drinkers.

On one hand, K-Supreme Plus SE maintenance is easier than with a drip coffee brewer. But on the other hand, it’s more complicated. For example, one issue with drip brewers is getting all of the water out of the machine. Even after pouring out the contents of the water tank, there’s usually still water left somewhere in the machine, so it needs to be held upside down over the sink. When pouring from left, right, front, and back, water comes out of each side. And if I put the machine down for a few minutes and then turn it upside down again, more water comes out. It’s like a never-ending process trying to drain the coffee maker.

However, when I held the K-Supreme Plus SE upside down over the sink, nothing came out. I went through each of the positions, and it was completely dry. Advantage: Keurig.

On the other hand, the K-Cup pod holder has entrance and exit needles that need to be avoided (to reduce the incidence of an injury) when removing the pod holder, and they need to be cleaned with a straightened paper clip to loosen stray coffee grounds. Otherwise, it’s easy to wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and rinse the drip tray and water reservoir. The brewer should be descaled every three months, or when the descaling notification appears on the control panel.

Should you buy it?

You’re always complaining about your coffee

If you tend to think the coffee is always too weak or too strong, or too hot or not hot enough, the K-Supreme Plus SE puts you in full control of the strength and temperature.

You like to make a pot of coffee

If you tend to make a pot of coffee for yourself or your household, it’s easier (and cheaper) to just add several scoops of coffee into a drip coffee maker and press brew.

If you like the idea of popping a K-Cup pod into a machine to make a single cup of coffee – but wanted more control over the process, the K-Supreme Plus SE has enough added features to make this an enjoyable process. The 5 strength settings and 5 temperature settings allow you to customize every cup of coffee, and the 5 quantity settings let you brew as little or as much as you want, while enjoying a variety of coffee flavors.

We test every coffee machine we review thoroughly over an extended period of time. We use industry-standard tests to compare features properly. We’ll always tell you what we find. We never, ever, accept money to review a product.

Find out more about how we test in our ethics policy.

  • Used as our main coffee machine for the review period
  • We roast our own beans for regular coffee machines, so we can fairly compare each machine; pod machines are tested with a variety of compatible capsules
  • Depending on capabilities, we test each machine's ability to make espresso and cappuccino
Why does Keurig say the K-Supreme Plus SE is programmable, but I can’t program the coffee maker to start at a certain time?

The K-Supreme Plus SE is programmable in the sense that you can select a strength, temperature and quantity, and then program it so you’ll only need to press one of the favorites buttons – instead of having to select these choices again. Up to 3 users can program favorites, and the positions are designated by 1, 2, and 3. But no, it’s not programmable in the sense that you can set it to start brewing at a certain time.
