The UK’s AI minister has warned it is “likely, if not inevitable” the country’s cyber defences will at some point be breached. Speaking at a press conference, Kanishka Narayan pointed to an incident of a rogue OpenAI agent hacking an Australian government website in June. He said while no medical records are known to have been accessed in the attack, the incident should still “concern us”. Narayan said the government plans to put advanced AI to work to combat the threat, as he set out how the government plans to prepare for any serious future incidents. BBC
The UK must not become dependent on foreign AI systems that can be switched off at short notice and must develop its own versions of the technology, according to the head of the Alan Turing Institute. The country needs a stronger domestic position in AI in response to the US and China’s runaway leadership in the field, with “national resilience” a key focus for ATI said George Williamson. The institute is the UK’s leading AI research body and is under new leadership after the government, its main source of funding, demanded a strategic shift. The Guardian

Its Kindles and Fire tablets have typically prioritised affordability above all else – and while that formula has worked, it hasn’t produced the most exciting tech around.
