Meta is reportedly planning to launch a new version of its popular smart glasses without a built-in camera, following a widespread public and regulatory backlash over privacy concerns.

Current models of Meta’s smart eyewear include a used for capturing photos, recording videos and allowing the company’s AI assistant to interpret the wearer’s surroundings.

However, the technology has drawn sharp criticism and even bans in various UK pubs, cinemas, theatres, schools and courtrooms. Critics and privacy advocates dubbed the devices “pervert glasses” after they were misused by individuals to secretly record people without their consent.

According to a report from , the upcoming camera-free glasses – known internally by the codename Luna – will rely entirely on audio as the primary interface to interact with Meta’s Muse AI agent.

Equipped with six built-in microphones, the device will provide real-time information to the wearer. Dropping the camera hardware is also expected to yield practical benefits, resulting in a significantly and extended battery life compared to their camera-equipped counterparts.

The new eyewear is anticipated to be officially unveiled next week at Meta’s annual . Alongside the camera-free model, the tech giant is reportedly set to announce an updated version of its original smart glasses, featuring tighter software controls designed to prevent misuse.

This follows recent updates intended to stop users from tampering with the physical LED recording light, including a fix that automatically halts recording if the indicator light is covered.
