Meta’s Muse reportedly passes 3 million weekly users and 5m downloads

More than 3 million people prompt Meta’s Muse at least once a week, according to internal data reviewed by The Information. More than 1 million send the AI agent a prompt every day, Jyoti Mann reported.

The weekly figure is part of a wider group. More than 4 million people use Muse in some way each week, according to the data. Most prompts come through the Muse app. Meta launched the agent in the US three weeks ago. TNW has not independently verified the figures.

Five million downloads in 22 days

Muse passed 5 million downloads on Wednesday, according to a projection by Sensor Tower analyst Kara Lee, 9to5Mac reported. By Sensor Tower’s count, ChatGPT took 56 days to reach that mark, Grok 103 and Claude 492. Muse is available on iOS and Android, but only in the US and Canada.

Meta’s own advertising helped. The company started to raise its ad spending for Muse on 16 September. Downloads jumped 73% that day, Sensor Tower said. Between 14 and 27 September, Muse took up to half of Meta’s daily house ad impressions. Facebook and WhatsApp gave up share. It was among the top 15 brands by US ad impressions in the week to 27 September.

Investors noticed the launch too. Meta’s shares jumped 11% on 22 September.

What users hand over

The BBC’s Thomas Germain spent a week testing Muse. When set up, it asks for control of a user’s Gmail, calendar and, on a Mac, the whole computer, he wrote. Meta uses Muse data to train its AI models by default. The company says it removes personal details first, and users can opt out in the settings.

Patrick Wardle, co-founder of the security nonprofit Objective-See, found a critical flaw in the app soon after launch, the BBC reported. Meta fixed it immediately. A spokesperson said Meta had delayed Muse for months for extra privacy and security tests.

“Safety and security is a huge priority for us,” a Meta spokesperson told the BBC.

Amazon has blocked Muse from shopping on its site.
