Musk says he will give a SpaceX share to every child in America next year

Elon Musk’s pledge covers shares from his own stake, and he says it is only the first giveaway. He posted the pledge on X early on Monday, hours after Anthropic set out its own share plan.

“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.” Elon Musk, on X

Musk did not say how the shares would reach the children or who would qualify. He also did not say when in 2027 the transfer would happen.

What the pledge is worth

There are just over 72 million people under 18 in the US, according to US Census Bureau estimates. SpaceX stock closed at $146.03 on Friday. At that price, 72 million shares would be worth about $10.5bn.

Musk held 6.42 billion SpaceX shares as of 30 June, according to an August SEC filing. That count includes shares in trusts, restricted stock and options. A giveaway of 72 million shares would be about 1.1% of it. SpaceX went public in June.

A reply to Anthropic

On Sunday, Anthropic said it would commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund. Musk replied to the company on X.

“I recommend giving the shares directly to the public… This is what I will be doing.” Elon Musk, replying to Anthropic on X

He is not the first SpaceX executive to pledge shares to children. In July, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said on X that she and her husband would give one SpaceX share each to more than 2 million American children. The shares go into the children’s Trump Accounts.
