Samsung could be preparing a change to its foldable phone lineup next year, with a new leak suggesting the Galaxy Z Fold 9 may launch alongside a second model aimed at a different type of buyer.
According to leaker Lanzuk, who shared the information on Naver, Samsung is reportedly considering two options for its next-generation foldable lineup: a larger Galaxy Z Fold 9 Plus or a more affordable Galaxy Z Fold 9 FE. However, the company hasn’t made a final decision, and the leak suggests only one of these models would launch alongside the standard Fold 9.
The decision could mark a shift in Samsung’s approach to foldables, particularly following the launch of the more compact, passport-style Galaxy Z Fold 8. Rather than offering a single successor, Samsung appears to be exploring ways to appeal to buyers who either want more screen space or a lower entry price.
If Samsung chooses the Plus model, the device would reportedly feature larger inner and outer displays than the standard Fold 9. That could make it more appealing for multitasking and watching videos, although the additional size might come at the expense of one-handed usability.
For comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a 5.5-inch cover display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, making it relatively compact compared with Samsung’s larger foldables.
The alternative would be a Galaxy Z Fold 9 FE, which could retain the same general design while cutting back on certain specifications to keep costs down. With the Galaxy Z Fold 8 starting at £1699/$1899, a cheaper version could make Samsung’s compact foldable design accessible to buyers who aren’t willing to spend flagship money.
For now, neither model is confirmed, and Samsung reportedly won’t pursue both options. The Galaxy Z Fold 9 is expected to arrive in the second half of 2027, leaving the company plenty of time to settle on its plans.
Either way, the leak suggests Samsung is looking beyond a straightforward annual upgrade and considering how to give foldable buyers more choice.
