Ofcom says it still has concerns over how X removes illegal hate content

Britain’s online safety regulator, Ofcom, says it still has concerns about how well X removes illegal hate and terror content. This comes even though X is now reviewing these reports more quickly.

In May, X promised to review posts reported through its UK illegal content tool within 24 hours on average. The company also said it would assess at least 85% of these posts within 48 hours.

According to Ofcom, X’s first quarterly report shows that it is now meeting those targets and acting faster than it did earlier this year. Also, the regulator plans to check these figures with its own tests.

Still, Ofcom is concerned about whether X is actually removing illegal posts. They have also received mixed feedback on whether X is working with outside experts as promised, and more analysis is expected early next year.

The update also included Ofcom’s investigation into X. The regulator began this case in January after reports that the Grok chatbot account on X was used to create sexual deepfakes of real people, including children.

Ofcom said it will now decide if X has met its legal duties to protect people in the UK from illegal content. If they find that X has failed, it will send the company a provisional view, and X will have a chance to respond before a final decision is made.

During its investigation, Ofcom found that some age-restricted porn was still visible to accounts not verified as adults. X has now fixed this issue, so Ofcom will focus on illegal content and how users can report it.

SpaceXAI, formerly known as xAI, has also added limits to its standalone Grok app. People in the UK can no longer view, create, or share porn using its image tool. Its companion chatbots, like ‘Ani’, can no longer have sexual chats with UK users either.

Pressure on X is growing in other areas too. A UK lawmaker has asked the High Court to stop Grok from making sexual images, and Ireland’s media regulator is investigating X over age checks.
