OpenAI bots may have contributed to a partial outage of a Wikimedia query service in May, as unauthorised bot activity ranged across the platform, the organisation said.
Wikimedia, which operates Wikipedia, said in an advisory on Monday that it had also seen unsuccessful attempts to exploit the Etherpad note-taking service, which it hosts as a community service.
Agents believed to originate from OpenAI tried to use Etherpad as a proxy to fetch data from other websites, while other probable OpenAI agents used the tool to take notes about their tasks, the foundation said.
Partial outage
It said the activity it uncovered didn’t seem to involve agents coordinating activity with one another, as was the case with a German wiki site commandeered earlier this year by semi-automated OpenAI tools.
The foundation said it identified wiki edits it believes were from OpenAI agents, most of which were published to “sandbox” areas of the wiki that aren’t visible to the public.
The edits included several to the configuration of a citation tool, which the foundation said it believes were intended to try to misuse the tool as a proxy for fetching data from remote services.
Security review
The suspected OpenAI agents made millions of automated requests to the foundation’s public APIs, crawled millions of pages and made hundreds of thousands of data queries to the Wikidata Query Service, which may have contributed to a partial WDQS outage in May, the foundation said.
OpenAI said it is working with the foundation to analyse the findings, but hasn’t yet been able to confirm whether its bots were involved.
Since a furore erupted over OpenAI bots hacking AI platform Hugging Face earlier this year, OpenAI has been reviewing its own testing activity and has so far notified hundreds of organisations about unauthorised actions carried out by its agents, including a hack of the Australian government in June.
