Replit moved most of its AI spending from Anthropic to OpenAI in recent months after OpenAI offered a discount of more than 30%, The Information reported on Saturday.
The contract is worth over $100M a year, a person familiar with the deal told The Information, in a story by Laura Bratton and Stephanie Palazzolo. Replit had planned to stay with Anthropic, which had discounted its models before. But Anthropic would not extend that discount without a bigger spending commitment, the report said.
TNW has not independently verified the figures. In September, The Information also reported that Anthropic ends discounts once customers use up their committed tokens.
Other customers moving
The OpenAI discounts are pulling other customers too. Rippling chief executive Parker Conrad told The Information that OpenAI models now handle 52% of the HR software company’s coding work, up from 16% in May. Anthropic’s share fell from 57% to 18% over the same period.
DataCamp chief executive Jonathan Cornelissen told The Information that OpenAI’s pricing cut his costs by 80% to 90%. A US bank with more than $7bn in assets had its ChatGPT seats doubled to 500 staff at no extra charge, the report said. It pays under $7 per user, against the usual $20 or more.
Replit’s own account
Replit chief executive Amjad Masad had already said at TechCrunch Disrupt that OpenAI’s models perform better on its benchmarks, TechCrunch reported.
“It was a decision based on both cost, partnership, and performance.” Amjad Masad, Replit
Masad later told TechCrunch that users can still pick Claude.
“Replit remains model agnostic. Our users can choose Anthropic’s Claude or other supported models.” Amjad Masad, to TechCrunch
A price war since June
Both labs have cut list prices sharply this year. On 22 September, OpenAI halved GPT-6 prices with its Sol and Luna models. The same day, Anthropic launched a cheaper Opus 5.5. Anthropic said the new model needs less computing power to run than Opus 5.
Chinese open-weight models add pressure from below. Moonshot released Kimi K3.1 Pro on Friday, with open weights due on 4 November.
