Slovenia’s .si domains hit 20,000 in a day after Trump renamed AI

Slovenia’s domain registry recorded 20,276 new .si web addresses in the 24 hours to Monday afternoon, the live counter on Register.si shows. The .si country code matches the initials of “super intelligence”, the name President Donald Trump has told US agencies to use instead of AI.

The registry counts 46,066 new .si domains in the past month and 298,682 in total. Register.si spokeswoman Klara Herman told the BBC that August brought fewer than 2,000. She called the activity in late September “unprecedented”, but said she was cautious about putting the whole rise down to Trump.

From the UN speech to the order

Trump told the UN General Assembly on 22 September that the word “artificial” made the technology “sound fake”. In the White House text of the speech, AI is “hereinafter officially called ‘Super Intelligence’”. On 29 September he signed an executive order telling federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official communications.

On 30 September, the day after the order, the registry recorded 11,000 new .si domains, Herman told the BBC. Trump has also named four officials to lead his new Super Intelligence Force. First Lady Melania Trump was born in Slovenia.

Who is buying

Security firm Netcraft counted 4,794 .si registrations in the 24 hours after the UN speech. By 1 October, the daily figure had reached 13,603. More than half of the .si names that people bought early through the registrar Dynadot went up for resale on its aftermarket.

Netcraft also found 87 .com domains that pair well-known brands with the word “superintelligence”. Their owners registered them before the order and offer them for resale at $20,000 each. The firm said it had not yet seen a rise in phishing linked to the rename.

Web host Hostinger told TechCrunch that .si is now its second most popular extension after .com. More than half of its .si buyers are in the US and India. Only about 3% of the names are explicitly about AI. A .si address costs about $12 a year on Hostinger, against $90 for .ai, which needs a two-year commitment.

“For Anguilla, .ai became a second economy. For Slovenia, .si is a nice bonus,” Klaudijus Januitis, head of domains at Hostinger, told TechCrunch.

Register.si says it will regularly publish the latest data on the growth.
