Spotify is getting more serious about selling enterprise software

Spotify is formalizing efforts around its enterprise and developer tools business with Thursday’s launch of technology.spotify.com, a new site that will make its internal tech available to outsiders.

The company’s foray into this space is not exactly new. As Spotify points out in its announcement of the new site, it’s been offering different products to the wider tech community since 2020 when it open sourced Backstage, a platform and framework for building customizable developer portals.

It has also been selling its enterprise-focused software experimentation platform Confidence since 2023 and its enterprise software development platform Portal since 2024. Earlier this year, it began selling its developer tool for managing AI coding agents, Xirp.

While many technology companies build their own internal systems to help their developers work more efficiently, it’s somewhat unusual to see a company like Spotify sell those tools to other businesses.

Spotify’s SVP of Technology & Platform, Tyson Singer, acknowledged that the company’s move into this space has raised questions.

“I get asked a version of this question every day: why is Spotify in the business of selling software?,” he wrote in a post on Spotify’s engineering site. “The truth is, the Spotify you know and love is more than a great streaming service. Behind our consumer app are hundreds of cross-functional squads shipping products and code day in, day out,” he explained.

The new technology website will house the solutions Spotify has built to serve its own audience of 777 million monthly active users, including both open source and paid services.

Though AI has made building such software faster, Spotify points out that this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s simpler — “the complexity, the cost and the operational surface area all grow with it,” Singer wrote. The company’s bet is that, despite AI’s advances, software development teams will still require certain core services, like those Spotify sells, which it says will be agent-ready.

So far, it’s unclear how much revenue Spotify’s enterprise sales are generating, as the company hasn’t disclosed those figures in its financial reporting. That could potentially change as Spotify makes a more concerted push into the enterprise market, turning what was once a side business into a more formal operation.

The technology website doesn’t include pricing; instead, companies can fill out a form to contact sales and discuss their needs.
