Apple’s second-generation HomePod is getting a useful new feature that could make it a much better companion for Mac users. The full-sized smart speaker will soon be able to work as a default Mac speaker, removing the need to manually select it whenever you want to play audio.
The feature was initially highlighted as an upgrade for the new HomePod mini 2, but Apple has since confirmed that it also works with the HomePod (2nd generation). According to the company, the functionality is supported on Mac desktops and laptops equipped with Wi-Fi 6E or later.
That’s a welcome change for anyone who already uses a HomePod alongside their Mac. While it’s possible to send audio from a Mac to a HomePod using AirPlay, the speaker hasn’t traditionally worked as a persistent default audio output in the same way as conventional desktop speakers. The new integration should make switching between music, video calls and other audio much more convenient.
Apple says the feature works with either a single HomePod or a stereo pair, giving users the option of a more spacious desktop audio setup. That could be particularly useful for watching films, gaming or taking FaceTime calls, although Apple hasn’t yet detailed how the new connection handles audio latency compared with AirPlay.
The confirmation comes alongside Apple’s announcement of the HomePod mini 2, which introduces an S10 chip, improved computational audio and new colour options. The smaller speaker also supports the default Mac audio feature, but the important detail is that existing HomePod 2 owners won’t need to buy the new mini to take advantage of it.
There is one limitation worth noting. The feature requires a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or newer, so owners of older machines won’t be able to use the new default speaker functionality, even if they already have a compatible HomePod. They’ll still be able to stream audio through AirPlay, as before.
Apple hasn’t provided a separate rollout date for the HomePod 2 functionality. However, with the feature now explicitly included in the company’s official compatibility notes, it’s a useful addition for anyone looking to make their HomePod a more permanent part of their Mac setup.
