This rare Nintendo GameCube just sold for an eye-watering $7,500

A rare Nintendo GameCube console has sold for a staggering $7,500, showing just how much collectors are willing to pay for some of the console’s most exclusive editions.

The model in question is the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles GameCube, a Japan-exclusive release that was limited to just 150 units.

Unlike the standard Indigo and Jet Black GameCube consoles, this special edition came in a distinctive Crystal White finish, a cream-like colour that’s different from the Pearl White version released in Europe.

According to Consolevariations, the console was never available to buy in stores and could only be won through a Japanese magazine sweepstakes, making it one of Nintendo’s hardest-to-find GameCube variants. The rarity has pushed prices well beyond what most people would expect to pay for a console from the early 2000s.

Two Crystal Chronicles GameCubes have reportedly sold for more than $5,000 this year, with one fetching just under $7,000 in May and another reaching $7,500 more recently. There’s also an unboxed unit listed on eBay for $3,750, although it comes with some visible wear.

The original bundle included a copy of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and a matching Game Boy Player, an accessory that allowed users to play Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games on their television. While the Game Boy Player was widely available in black, the Crystal White version is considerably harder to find.

And it’s not the only GameCube commanding serious money. The Heineken GameCube, produced for a 2002 promotional sweepstakes, was limited to just 100 units split between Indigo and Jet Black versions. Listings for the unusual console have reached as high as $15,500 on eBay, although that’s an asking price rather than a confirmed sale.

Other collectible editions include the red Gundam Char GameCube and the mint green Tales of Symphonia bundle, which was released in Japan and France with approximately 10,000 units produced. The latter is considerably easier to find, with prices generally staying below $1,500.

For collectors, the Crystal Chronicles edition stands out not just for its unusual colour but for how few were ever made. And with recent sales reaching $7,500, it’s clear that some GameCube consoles have become considerably more valuable than the games they were originally designed to play.
