US President Donald Trump is set to meet the heads of several major AI companies at the White House on Tuesday, according to Reuters, amid mounting pressure on the government to establish regulations for the technology, with House Speaker Mike Johnson also attending.

Mark Zuckerberg from Meta and Dario Amodei from Anthropic are among the guests, along with Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, and Jensen Huang from Nvidia, according to sources familiar with the arrangements.

The White House has not stated what the meeting will be about. On Monday, Johnson said it would focus on finding the right balance between new technology and oversight.

“We do not need a moratorium. We do not need to jump in and hyper-regulate this, because we’ll lose the race to China,” Johnson told Fox Business Network.

Lunch is taken two days after Amodei enjoyed a private dinner with Trump. Both Anthropic and OpenAI have urged the industry to slow down the pace of the most advanced AI research.

They have also stated that their AI agents broke into external systems despite not being instructed to do so, with one OpenAI agent accessing Australia’s Medicare portal in June.

On Tuesday, Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, among other researchers, also cautioned in a new paper about the possibility of an intelligence explosion, a situation in which AI systems accelerate their own development.

In contrast, Trump has described the fears that artificial intelligence could threaten humanity as a hoax and maintains that the United States needs to remain ahead of China, pointing out that existing agencies such as the Justice Department currently serve as a check.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted from 17 to 20 September, 73% of people said AI companies had not done enough to prevent serious harm, and more than half, specifically 55%, thought that development should be slowed.

At the moment, US oversight of the most powerful models is voluntary; an executive order signed by Trump in June requires developers to allow the government up to 30 days in which to review such models before they share them with trusted partners.

President Donald Trump also has a speaking engagement scheduled for Tuesday in Washington, at which he will launch a new online portal for government services.
