Uber says it has defeated £340M lawsuit from London black cab drivers

Uber said on Monday that it had won its bid to throw out two linked lawsuits in London worth about £340mn. The claims were brought by thousands of black cab drivers and two former minicab companies.

The ruling was first reported by , which said a copy of the High Court judgment was not yet available

According to , the judge found that the claimants had waited too long to challenge what they said were Uber’s unlawful operations. The claims were filed in 2024 by about 13,000 drivers. Individual claims were worth up to £25,000 each.

They alleged that Uber gave misleading information to Transport for London (TfL) when it applied for a private hire operator licence. As a result, they argued, the licence should never have been granted.

The drivers said Uber then used that licence to undercut black cab fares. Their claims covered the period from 2012 to March 14, 2018, when Uber changed how it operated in London, according to a 2025 High Court ruling on the case.

A second claim was brought on behalf of Kabbee and Iride, two former private hire firms. The two claims were valued at about £199mn and £141mn.

Uber denied the allegations and has said it operates lawfully in London with a full TfL licence. Its main defence, however, was timing.

Under the Limitation Act 1980, most such claims must be brought within six years, and Uber argued that each claim was time-barred.

The drivers had argued that the clock should start later. They said they could not reasonably have discovered the alleged deception until a June 2018 court hearing over Uber’s licence, which followed TfL’s decision in 2017 to refuse a renewal.

In October 2025, the court ordered a separate trial on that question alone, using 20 sample claimants, 10 picked by each side. That hearing took place in late June,  reported.

“These old claims are completely unfounded,” an Uber spokesperson said at the time.

Monday’s decision means the court will not examine the substance of the allegations unless the claimants win an appeal.
