Users report screen cracks and display failures on Apple’s iPhone Duo

Apple’s newly launched iPhone Duo is facing early scrutiny over hardware durability, with some users reporting cracked internal displays and pixel failures just days after the foldable smartphone hit the shelves.

Released in global markets on October 23, the premium device, priced from $1,999, has sparked concern following reports shared across Reddit, X and technology forums.

Images and user accounts highlight damage concentrated around the internal folding hinge, with several screens developing vertical fractures, bright white lines and dead pixels shortly after unboxing.

Among the earliest documented cases was an Australian Reddit user, identified as Midnight_Slump, who reported that their iPhone Duo’s internal display cracked after roughly six hours of ownership and fewer than 20 openings.

According to the user, an unusual sensation was felt beneath the display near the hinge before a visible crack formed along the folding mechanism, with no external drops or trapped objects to account for the failure.

Following initial hurdles with replacement logistics, the customer secured a device swap at an Apple Store and forum moderators later verified the claim using supporting photographs and service documentation.

Similar complaints have quickly accumulated online. By October 25, tech publications had tracked roughly ten distinct cases of screen damage, featuring central cracks running down the flexible display and horizontal bands of dead or white pixels occurring during initial setup.

Technology commentator Mike Rundle noted on X that he had observed multiple photographs detailing matching damage, alongside circulating video footage on TikTok.

The recurring pattern has centred suspicion on the device’s hinge assembly. Early teardown analysis and durability testing by content creators, including YouTuber CuriousHagi, revealed a broken connecting component within the hinge mechanism that appeared thinner than surrounding parts.

Physical marks observed on a supporting plate suggest the mechanism may occasionally catch during folding operations, potentially exerting undue pressure on the flexible organic light-emitting diode display panel.

Despite the mounting online reports, experts emphasise that there is currently insufficient data to determine whether the failures stem from a widespread manufacturing defect or isolated incidents. Apple has yet to issue an official statement addressing the reported screen durability issues.
